About the NDIS
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a Commonwealth government initiative that takes a new approach to providing individualised supports for people with permanent and significant disabilities, their families, and carers.
Planned to take effect in South East Queensland in July 2018, the NDIS will give you unprecedented control over your disability support funding.
What will it mean for me?
The NDIS has been designed to provide you with more choice and control over your day-to-day activities. As an NDIS participant you will be given the option to self-manage your own support plan, giving you the flexibility and freedom to pursue the things in life that matter to you most.
Who will benefit?
When the NDIS is introduced to the Greater Brisbane region in 2018, you will be eligible to participate if you are:
- living with permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities;
- an Australian citizen or permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, or the holder of a Protected Special Category Visa; and
- under the age of 65.
For further information on eligibility, please visit the NDIS access checklist: www.ndis.gov.au/ndis-access-checklist .
Even if you are currently not receiving disability services, you may still be eligible for the NDIS. Contact the NDIS directly to complete an access request form. Visit www.ndis.gov.au or call 1800 800 110.

What can I do to prepare?
To get the best out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme we advise you to start thinking about your goals and aspirations now, and keep a record of your thoughts in a personal diary in the meantime. This information will help you to develop your NDIS plan, including developing a list of supports you will need to help you achieve your goals when the Scheme launches fully in 2018.
Our NDIS research has shown that:
- Participants who plan early have a clearer idea of all the supports they require, reducing uncertainties and the need for Plan reviews.
- Participants who think about their needs and have this information ready are more likely to have a better experience and outcomes from the NDIS.
